A Powerful Conflict Image

Human history is dotted with wars and conflicts and what connects them are the same reasons – human greed, fight over land and resources. Humanity has hardly evolved.

Today an image is trending from Gaza of a hospital director, a doctor walking bravely towards the army tanks in his white coat through the rubble. He refused to leave his patients and fellow doctors and perhaps was the last person to surrender – the captain of the ship after it was completely destroyed.

The image clearly shows the true dichotomy and duality of human nature – love and hate.

One can only hope this image becomes a game changer like many other images have in the past – Kevin Carter’s image which brought aid to Africa, a famous image of the Vietnam war which led to massive protests and the end of the war.

These brave photo-journalists are locals as most journalists who were reporting have been killed, western media folks are on christmas break. I am yet to see the name of the person who shot this but it was shared by the instagram account seen in the image.

One can hope this image trends and changes course of this never ending conflict – that’s the least and most we can do while praying for the safe return of this doctor who chose to stay in the conflict zone to treat innocent civilians injured in the war.

If courage had a name and face – it would be of this doctor, other doctors, nurses, journalists, aid workers, civilians who are trying to save humanity from the pandemic of apathy.
